Another wonderful accolade for Burlingame. Congrats to the Burlingame High School Teachers, Staff,Read More Students and Families! How can we become #1? Perhaps we should study what the top 10 do? Check out this school operator who has a high school that's #4 in the United States....Basis Schools. http://basisschools.org/

Who will respond to emergencies at Hoover School? I measured the width of the two small bridgesRead More near the bottom of Canyon Road today. One is 17’ 10” and the other is 18’. Emergency response vehicles are 10’ wide, landscape pickup trucks are 8 feet wide and SUVs are 7’ feet wide. Consider what will happen every school day when children are dropped off at school. Traffic will stop on these two bridges and no emergency vehicles will be able to pass. This will happen every school day, twice a day even when there isn’t an emergency. Consider what will happen during any real emergency. The school is located near the San Andreas Fault. Two 30” high pressure gas mains are even closer. The fire department plans to close the fire house on Hillside near the Hoover School. Who will respond to emergencies at Hoover School? How will responders get to the school? PS 4/23/2013 Prior to attending the groundbreaking I measured two additional bridges. One is on Summit, the other is on Easton. Both are within 50 yards of the school. The Summit bridge is 20' wide and the Easton bridge is 17'-10". Neither will allow emergency vehicles to pass during peak traffic periods or a general emergency. The only emergency vehicle access will be through the Hillsborough side of Summit. With all of the executed and planned fire/EMT consolidations........ Good luck! I sincerely hope emergency vehicle access never becomes an issue for the students.

Unbelievable that the Burlingame School District has the audacity to move forward with an unsettledRead More lawsuit at their back. This lawsuit revolves around major safety, unresolved traffic & environmental concerns that the school district is ignoring. The residents of Burlingame will in total be spending about $20 million to renovate this inadequate school for 200 - 250 children. Not the way the city should be spending our money. A more feasible site, maybe the old Peninsula Hospital site, that would allow more of our 3,000 students a benefit would make sense. The district has put their neck out & now will just barrel forward without concern that this was a bad idea from the beginning.

len, Can you tell use what adminstrators and principals make each year?
len March 13, 2013 at 01:57 am
some administrative salaries are warranted. I believe principals are part of the administration.Read More and I think they (the ones we know) do a stellar job, and also deserving some salary credit... They are on the front lines too...
Lynette Manieri March 12, 2013 at 11:04 pm
I am so very sick of the teachers getting the screw. Cut down on administrative salaries. If theyRead More received what the teachers do, they's be out there screaming as well.

Hey, hey Vicki I heard of pin the tail on the donkey, but why me, sorry I'm not "up onRead More game" for the new millennium ways of sex - woman!
Vicki Moore March 5, 2013 at 04:59 am
I don't know this teacher, the child or her parents. But the people in her social circle obviouslyRead More do. I am horrified that you would report the details of this situation. And then allow a jackass comment like George's. It shows the lack of empathy and compassion this publication and its editor have.
George March 5, 2013 at 02:38 am
Digital penetration?? So does that mean, give me the digits and I'll penetrate or I'll text you? SoRead More does that mean there's such thing as iPhone penetration?

Thank you.
Angelina P March 12, 2013 at 06:16 pm
Thank you for doing that.

I disagree that students should fight the intruder at their school. They should leave it to theRead More teachers. Though I do respect that they help the student at their school.

How much money did WE the taxpayers lose in this law suit? Who was the law office that representedRead More us? Why did Anne Campbell think we would win? Anyone know?

I think it's great that the kids have a fun project to raise money for their class. I didn't seeRead More ANYTHING negative about this article. I like it. :)

Bzzzzzzzzzz RethinkWaste is a joint powers authority of twelve public agencies (Atherton, Belmont,Read More Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, the County of San Mateo and the West Bay Sanitary District) in San Mateo County, California
Lionel Emde January 27, 2013 at 02:37 am
Uh, "Rethinkwaste" is a part of Recology, a profit-making corporation engaged inRead More extracting money from residents they collect garbage from. Why didn't the story clearly identify that?

We went to the Petaluma pumpkin festival. They placed the same cowboy hat on each child for photosRead More of them seated on a pony. I almost called the health dept.

Actually, the lice shampoo didn't work for us at all, but this worked great, and was much less toxicRead More than the shampoo option: http://www.nuvoforheadlice.com Also, our school said my son could go back to school as soon as he was treated, and they did not check for nits, nor do they have a no nits policy.

Hi Todd, I hope to see you at the SBPSD Board meeting 7pm tonight where there will much discussionRead More about the district's budget; including a report from an external financial auditor. Perhaps you can ask him do what degree he might (or might not) think that funds are are being wasted? Tonight's agenda is here... http://sbpsd.k12.ca.us/assets/docs/board-agenda.pdf One thought about your comments: - In our private business, we are able to turn away poor performers and unprofitable projects, public schools are obligated to educate all kids, and deliver on unfunded state requirements. In many ways, they are already micromanaged.
Scott C. January 16, 2013 at 06:05 pm
Not counted is the disparity in regards to wealthier parents being able to contribute more time andRead More resources to their children's education inside and outside the classroom. I think the Brown budget isn't perfect, but it's headed in the right direction. You can find the 18 page summary here... http://www.ebudget.ca.gov/BudgetSummary/BSS/BSS.html
Todd Mirkin January 16, 2013 at 01:08 pm
If I am 100% honest with myself, and this goes against my core as somebody who manages people andRead More projects for a living, I would micromanage the distribution of the education's budget. Before doling anything out I would look at each districts budgets and expenditures. As in look at their books. If balance their budgets in a true to real life way, as in the way we the people have to in our own lives and private businesses, and the budgets don't show tax dollars being wasted than they get moved up the list for more funds. If they do 1/2 of the have above put them in the pack in the middle of the list. If they do neither to bottom of the State's educational funds list they go. Unfortunately due to budget trickery, such as using one time payments to balance the books, San Bruno would be in the middle of the pack.

Its an interesting idea. Now, though, who is going to pay for all the computers needed for theseRead More tests? To make the test fair, each student will have to take them at the same time. Where will the schools put them? Who will pay for IT staff to make sure they are operating properly? Who will pay the insurance for the computers, and for the extra electricity needed at each school site? Where are the facts behind the ability to implement this new plan? This plan needs more details explained.
navigio January 10, 2013 at 03:18 pm
Not only that, but CST participation rate is a metric for AYP, so a school that falls below the 95%Read More threshold will not make AYP (not that that matters anymore, nor that it ever mattered for non-title1 schools like SM). I would expect ongoing district assessments are used more than CSTs for placement for intervention given that there are more of them and they are more closely aligned with what is going on the classroom. If its true that schools are using CST results for individual intervention decisions, then I think parents should know that (and realize its probably a bad idea). Your school site council should have info on that since its job is to monitor things like that. In any case, anyone who wants to opt out should also ask their child. They should have a say in the matter.
Louis Educe January 10, 2013 at 12:07 pm
Gail Ann, while you are correct on the parent opt out right please make sure and tell parents to askRead More the school/district what the STAR scores are used for with in the disrtict/school/grage-level. if the child is in the middle grades (7th and 8th are most important) these scores are used to make placement choices for high school courses. Many HS counselors will NOT look very closely at grades (A,Bs) because of the fear of grade inflation - unless you can make sure you child also have some non-biased, standardized (normed) test data their placement choices might be limited. If your child is a high performer you can have them start taking the PSAT in 8th grade (but they will be compared to 10th grade standards). At the lower grade levels the CST data is used to also make placement choices into intervention as well as higher level instructional clusters. Be well aware of the implications of withdrawing your child from the testing before you just exercise you right to "make a point"

Time to get rid of TSA. Ripping off baggage is common with them.
Harry E. Smith January 7, 2013 at 05:53 pm
Now being annoyed with the harsh, discourteous, and uncaring attitude of the TSA is a crime??? ByeRead More bye 1st Amendment. What will be taken from the people next in the name of government authority???

Jo Tog, we'll have to agree to disagree. Happy New Year to you.
Jo Tog January 3, 2013 at 05:14 pm
I have raised many kids, including my own. The Ten Commandments needs to be put back in all publicRead More buildings, cause therin lies the problems we are having today with our youth. Too many government officials, teachers are lawbreakers, cheaters, thiefs, and commies. Commies hate the Ten Commandments. They, commies, prefer chaos and the breakdown of the American Family. Makes it easier for them to brainwash the likes of you.
Dee January 2, 2013 at 04:11 pm
With 800 people you're bound to have some trouble, I agree. But as a parent of teenagers I wouldRead More never consent to having them attend a hotel party in the city with 800 people! Sounds like trouble to me. Perhaps many of those kids went without telling their parents where they really were. So it makes me wonder how kids are being raised these days, or are parents more lenient or just not paying attention? Are kids different today or are the parents parenting differently?

Didn't Columbine High School have one or two armed police officers on site? That didn't stop fromRead More 12 students being killed... So it's already proven that having armed guard won't prevent innocents from being killed at a school. not to mention the malls, movie theaters, shopping centers, workplaces, walking down the street... And so many schools don't even have enough finances to hire a crossing guard, a librarian, a teacher, counselor, nurse... To get enough funds to do the most basic things schools should do, it's like pulling teeth to get it. Who's going to pay for a 6+hr daily armed security with full training, psychological and background vetting, etc etc? Taxpayers?

Why on earth would any school district follow the advise of an unelected, special interest groupRead More with NO educational experience?! I will not send my child to any school where any of the staff have firearms! Way to go, Medea! Code Pink rocks!
