Burlingame Residents Complete Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon

The race is considered one of the most difficult triathlons in the world.

Seven Burlingame residents were among the 2,000 people -- from ages 16 to 76 -- who competed in the on Sunday.

Andy Potts of Colorado Springs, Colo., came in first place for his fifth time with a finish rate of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 17 seconds, according to event officials.

Leanda Cave of Tuscon, Ariz., took the first place position amongst the women, making this her fourth win of the race. She finished the race in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 17 seconds.

Featuring a 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shore, an 18-mile bike ride and an eight-mile run through San Francisco, this race is considered one of the most difficult triathlons in the world.

The Burlingame residents who completed the race include Benny Niland, 37, with a time of 3 hours, 37 minutes and 12 seconds; Elizabeth Smith, 39, with a time of 3 hours, 20 minutes and 5 seconds; Lisa Uithoven, 40, with a time of 4 hours, 3 minutes and 6 seconds; Michele Hanak, 47, with a time of 4 hours, 16 minutes and 37 seconds; Tom Kiely, 41, with a time of 2 hours, 59  minutes and 30 seconds; Robert Janosky, 44, with a time of 3 hours, 17 minutes and 44 seconds; and Frank Dommen, 50, with a time of 3 hours, 25 minutes and 38 seconds.
