Walk to School Wednesday

Wednesday is International Walk to School Day.

Swing on your backpack and strap on your tennis shoes. Wednesday is International Walk to School Day.

On Walk to School Day, Burlingame and Hillsborough kids are encouraged to walk, bike or skateboard to class, instead of riding in cars or buses.

The walking event began in 1997, aimed at raising awareness for creating walkable communities. In 2000, Canada and the UK joined in, making Walk to School Day and international event. Today, more than 40 countries celebrate the occasion.

Burlingame’s Roosevelt Elementary School Principal Matt Pavao said in e-mail that Roosevelt students walking receive stickers. He said all students walking to school count, including those who may live too far to walk the entire way, but have their parents park in the neighborhood and complete the rest of the journey on foot.

Parents will be stationed at nearby intersections to ensure safety.
