Burlingame Starts Work on New Elementary School

This will be the first new elementary school built in Burlingame in more than 50 years.

The last time Burlingame built a public elementary school, filmstrips were high tech, the pioneers of the personal computing revolution were barely out of diapers, and air conditioning was asking Suzy or Dennis to open the window.

Schools need more infrastructure these days.

Burlingame School District broke ground Tuesday on the first new elementary school in more than 50 years. It’s a case of déjà vu all over again for longtime residents. Hoover Elementary School was opened in 1931, with an amphithitheater added in 1938. Declining enrollment prompted the closure of the school in 1979, followed by the sale of the campus in 1988 to the Shinnyo-En Buddhist organization.

The site came back up for sale in 2010, just about the time that the school district was deciding what to do about a sharp rise in enrollment. The District purchased it for $4.85 million.

After years of planning and paperwork, construction is finally underway. The existing main school building will be renovated, and a new, three-story, 14,160-square-foot building will be constructed. Extra parking will be added, a playground is planned, and the landscaping will be spruced-up.

The new school is scheduled to open in August 2014.

Superintendent Dr. Maggie MacIsaac told Patch that the district is pleased that students will have this new school available in the near future.
