Planning Commission Will Tackle Sign Ordinance Revisions

New rules will only affect particular types of lots in Burlingame.

The Burlingame Planning Commission will consider changes to the city’s sign ordinance at its regularly scheduled meeting tonight at city hall.

The city’s sign ordinance received a major overhaul in 2007.  The need for the changes being considered only recently came to light according to a staff report.

The changes will only affect lots with irregular shapes that, because of their shape, don’t have the minimum required street frontage for a monument style sign.

According to the staff report, the need for the revision came to light with the recent opening of the Peninsula Museum of Art.  The museum is situated behind another building.

Access to the museum is by way of an access drive that is 66 feet wide running from California Drive to the museum and its parking lot.  The 66-foot frontage on California Drive is far less than the required 150 feet, but without a sign it is difficult for patrons to see where the museum is located.

The proposed revision will allow two-sided monument signs no higher than five feet and a maximum sign area of 30 square feet per side.

The planning commission will also consider a number of requests for variances and conditional use permits in both residential and commercial areas.

The Burlingame Planning Commission meets in the Council Chambers at city hall, 501 Primrose Road.  The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
