Does Someone Owe You Money?
Thousands of Burlingame residents and businesses have unclaimed property and money in the hands of banks and other organizations.
Every year, millions of dollars in cash and other valuables (not including real estate) are turned over to the California state controller by financial institutions, insurance companies, corporations and other business enterprises under the state's unclaimed property law.
The law requires the state to take custody of the property if there has been no contact between the individual or organization "owning" the property and those "holding" it for a period of three years.
Property includes bank accounts and contents in safety deposit boxes, stock dividend payments, certificates of deposit and even entire estates.
According to the controller, there are many reasons property remains unclaimed: the owner forgot about the account, does not leave a forwarding address, the forwarding order expires, or the owner dies and the heirs don't know about the property.
Currently the state controller is holding nearly $6 billion dollars in property belonging to almost 12 million individuals and businesses or other organizations. Thousands of these have last known addresses in Burlingame. Does somebody owe you money?
Each week, Burlingame Patch will post a new list in alphabetical order of residents and businesses that are owed money.
