Council Review

What you missed at last night's city council meeting.

While the main discussion at Monday night's city council meeting centered around the adoption of the Downtown Burlingame Specific Plan, council members touched on other important issues throughout the night, as well.

The meeting began with an update on the Safeway project by Deb Karbo, a Safeway real estate manager.  She introduced the new Safeway liason for Burlingame residents, who will be responsible for keeping citizens aware of new developments through updating the project website.

Karbo also announced a preliminary timeline for the project. She said a contract with W.L. Butler Construction had been awarded for demolition and abatement, both of which are expected to be done by the end of the year. There is a September 2011 goal for completion of the new Safeway.

In the meantime, Karbo said, people can view the progress of construction through a webcam linked to the project website.

After the public hearing on the Downtown Burlingame Specific Plan, the public hearing on adopting an ordinance implementing a sidewalk repair program was waived until Oct. 18.

At the last public hearing, the council voted in favor of allowing an alcohol sales permit for a new bar at 305 California Dr.

Three ordinances were introduced and the consent calendar was approved. A notable consent calendar item was the adoption of a resolution opposing Proposition 23. Members from the Burlingame Citizens Environmental Council came out in support of the resolution.

Council members also updated residents on High Speed Rail (HSR). There is potential that cut and cover tracks may again be up for discussion, as opposed to aerial tracks through Burlingame. Additionally, Brisbane may join the Peninsula Cities Consortium, adding a sixth member to the group.
