City Council Preview

A preview of the council's meeting Monday night.

The Burlingame City Council meets Monday at 7 p.m. in the council chambers, at which time members are expected to approve a new labor agreement with the Police Officers Association (POA). The previous agreement expired on Dec. 31, 2008. On Nov. 8, the POA ratified the agreement after more than two years of discussion.

During the past two years, the changing economy and tightened Burlingame budget impacted negotiations. According to a staff report, The POA agreed to no salary increases for the first three years of the five-year agreement followed by increases of 2 percent, 2.25 percent and 2.5 percent. The contract begins retroactively to January 2009 and runs through December 2013.

New hires will receive contributions to retirement health savings accounts only after five years of service, then 2 percent for five to 20 years of sevice and 2.5 percent for each subsequent year. No contributions will be made after the employee retires.
