Caltrain Update: Joint Powers Board Declares Fiscal Emergency

While a final solution to Caltrain's multi-million dollar budget deficit has yet to be released, the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board delcared a fiscal emergency.

The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board unanimously voted to approve a resolution to declare a fiscal emergency for Caltrain in fiscal year 2012.

It goes without saying that , with the board projecting that the railway is facing a $30.3 million operational deficit based on current budget and service levels.

Among the solutions the board is considering to minimize this budget gap is a closure of up to seven Caltrain stations, including the historic Burlingame Avenue station.

Following two hours of oral testimony from the public, the board declared a fiscal emergency with no discussion or further explanation.

The two hours of testimony came from a large turnout of individuals, each speaking under a less than one minute time constraint.

Burlingame Mayor Terry Nagel and Downtown Business Improvement District President Dale Ferrel were among the City of Burlingame representatives who spoke at the meeting.

To find out what these Burlingame locals had to say, stay tuned for a more in-depth report from Burlingame Patch.

It seems like the Board had their minds made up long before the meeting started. They didn't even play lip service to all the people who spoke for two hours before the "vote".

Thanks for sharing your insights, Jeff. Unfortunately, you are not the only one who feels this way. Following the Board's decision your same sentiments were expressed among the attendees of Thursday's meeting.
