Battle Continues Against Yellow Fever Mosquito in County
The discovery of the Yellow Fever Mosquito, which carries the hemorrhagic Yellow Fever, resulted in an urgent response from multiple agencies.

The unexpected discovery of Yellow Fever mosquitoes in Menlo Park has prompted a multi-agency response that includes San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control, San Mateo County Health, Menlo Park Police Department and San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department.
“Yellow fever is a hemorrhagic disease caused by a virus which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito,” according to the Mosquito and Vector Control District.

Typically found in tropical and subtropical areas of South America and Africa, serious cases of Yellow Fever cause “high fever, jaundice, bleeding, and failure of multiple organs.”
There is currently no treatment for Yellow Fever.

During the past 5 weeks, 926 sites have been inspected for the mosquito:
- 126 larval samples were taken
- 14 percent of larval samples included Yellow Fever Mosquitoes
- three adult Yellow Fever Mosquitoes were found, all in Menlo Park
