Woman Pleads No Contest in Mills-Peninsula Files Case

Katherine Asimos reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.

A Millbrae woman accused of taking home hundreds of hospital patient files from her job in the mail room pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of embezzling property this week, according to prosecutors.

Katherine Asimos, 50, a former mail room employee at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, entered the plea on Thursday as part of a plea agreement reached with prosecutors, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

In return for the plea, she was sentenced to two years court probation, ordered to pay of restitution and ordered not to possess any personal or financial information of any third party without the court's consent. Prosecutors dismissed remaining charges in the case and in an unrelated November 2010 case in which she was charged with five misdemeanor counts of writing checks on her father's bank account without his permission, Wagstaffe said.

Asismos, who had worked in the Mills-Peninsula mailroom since 2001, was fired in June 2011 after hospital administrators learned she had taken home hundreds of patient files containing information such as test results, dates of birth and patient names. She told investigators she had taken the files home because she was overwhelmed and behind in her filing, Wagstaffe said.

Asismos was ordered to return to court on July 31 for the court to set the amount of restitution she will be required to pay.
