Woman Who Led Deputies On Low Speed Chase Set For Court Appearance

According to prosecutors, the woman drove through several intersections in Half Moon Bay without stopping and held her hand out the window making a peace sign.

A San Diego woman accused of stealing an RV and leading San Mateo County sheriff's deputies on a low-speed chase through Half Moon Bay last week is expected to appear in court this afternoon.

Carly Gutierrez, 32, is scheduled to enter a plea in San Mateo County Superior Court to felony charges of commercial burglary, vehicle theft and reckless driving in connection with the episode, which started in San Mateo on Wednesday afternoon, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

At about 1:30 p.m. that day, Gutierrez allegedly walked into the administrative office at Condon and Sons Lumber Yard and attempted to rent an RV, Wagstaffe said.

The business maintains moving trucks and other vehicles as rentals, according to its website.

When Gutierrez' rental request was denied, she allegedly left the office, got into an RV worth roughly $25,000 and drove off, Wagstaffe said.

A short time later, a sheriff's deputy spotted the stolen RV near Highway 92 and Main Street in Half Moon Bay and attempted to stop it, Wagstaffe said.

The driver, later identified as Gutierrez, apparently refused to pull over, and led the deputy on a pursuit that reached speeds of between 25 mph and 35 mph, Wagstaffe said.

According to prosecutors, Gutierrez drove through several intersections without stopping and held her hand out the window making a peace sign during the pursuit.

She finally pulled over near Alsace Lorraine and Kelly avenues and was taken into custody without further incident, Wagstaffe said.

Gutierrez, who had been reported missing by friends early last week, remains in custody on $25,000 bail.
