Police Target Drivers, Protect Pedestrians Wednesday

Burlingame Police will be on the lookout for drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks Wednesday.

Attention, Burlingame residents. Remember, when in a crosswalk, pedestrians have the right of way. If a Burlingame driver fails to yield to pedestrians Wednesday, there may be a Burlingame Police officer lurking nearby, ready to catch the driver in the act.

On August 1, the Burlingame Police Department is conducting special enforcement aimed at finding drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks throughout the City.

This special enforcement is a result of complaints to police from pedestrians.

The Burlingame Police Department reported that, according to the California State Wide Integrated Traffic Reporting System (SWITERS), in 2009, cars killed 561 pedestrians and injured 11,764 pedestrians.

In 2010 in Burlingame, 17 pedestrians had collisions with cars, resulting in 15 injuries.
