Man Killed While Crossing Street in San Mateo

The 69-year-old San Mateo man was struck at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and South B Street on Wednesday evening.

A 69-year-old San Mateo man was killed by crossing a street in San Mateo on Wednesday evening, police said Thursday.

Fire and medical personnel responded to the intersection of Ninth Avenue and South B Street at about 7:40 p.m. to reports to an auto vs. pedestrian crash with injuries, San Mateo Police Lt. Ted Gonzales said.

A preliminary investigation indicates the victim was walking south just south of Ninth Avenue when he was hit.

It wasn't immediately known whether the man was in or out of the crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle, Gonzales said.

The vehicle that struck the man was traveling west on Ninth Avenue and in the process of making a left turn ont southbound South B Street at the time of the collision, according to Gonzales.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses in the area were able to provide police with some information as it relates to this accident.

At this time there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident. The case is still under investigation, and after completion, will be forwarded to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office for review. The driver was not cited for any violations at the scene.

The San Mateo Police Department wants to remind everyone of the following pedestrian/driver safety tips:

  • Cross only at corners or in designated cross walks.
  • Be alert for all traffic and cross with proper indicator at signal light intersections.
  • Watch for vehicles pulling out of parking lots, alleys or driveways.
  • If possible, try to make eye contact with the driver of a vehicle before crossing in front.
  • Drivers should be aware of all pedestrian traffic and yield to pedestrians.
  • Be especially alert making right and left turns where pedestrians can be present.
