Law Enforcement Officials Remember Slain Colleagues

Law enforcement officials gathered at Courthouse Square in Redwood City Wednesday to remember the commitment their fallen colleagues made to preserving peace and public safety. 

"We recognize the nobility that is this calling," said Chief Susan Manheimer, President of the San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff's Association. 

"Today is for the friends, families, and colleagues of those slain in the line of duty," Manheimer said to a group of about 70.  

Officers from throughout San Mateo County attended the event including Redwood City Police, Menlo Park Police, Pacifica Police, California Highway Patrol's Redwood City division, East Palo Alto Police, The City of San Mateo Police, and Daly City Police. 

Today's event was held in conjunction with National Police Week, which began in 1960 when then President John F. Kennedy delcared May 15th to be Peace Officer Memorial Day.

Each year, family members and officers gather to remember offers who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect civilization, tell their stories, and enable them to live on in the memories of others. Many of the officers who were killed in the line of duty were young and had families.
