This Saturday, Behan’s Irish Pub in Burlingame will be raising money for the family relief fund of Deputy Eric Mertl, who was killed in a motorcycle crash while off-duty.
From 7 to 10 p.m., Guinness, the San Mateo County Firefighters and the San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff’s Association are hosting the charitable event, “Paint the Town Black with Guinness.”
A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Deputy Eric Mertl Relief Fund, organized through the San Francisco Police Credit Union in San Mateo.
Burlingame resident Mertl, 51, was riding at the intersection of El Camino Real and Bellevue Avenue in Burlingame at 12:15 p.m. on January 30 when the crash occurred. He was taken to Stanford Hospital, but died from his injuries, Burlingame-Hillsborough Patch reported.
The driver of the car, a 64-year-old woman from San Carlos, was not injured in the collision.
Mertl joined the sheriff's office in 2005 after 19 years of service with the Millbrae Police Department, according to the sheriff's office. His most recent position was in patrol.
He was remembered by those who knew him as a dedicated husband and father who never forgot his inner child.
