A 26-year-old Daly City man died after his vehicle struck a tree off of a ramp between Interstate Highway 280 and state Highway 85 in Sunnyvale late Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 11:09 p.m. Thursday on the connector ramp between northbound Highway 280 and northbound Highway 85.

The driver of a red 2002 Mazda Protégé was traveling around the right curve on the ramp when, for an unknown reason, he went off the roadway and struck the tree, according to the CHP.

CHP officers arrived to find the man, a Daly City resident, trapped in the driver's seat of the Mazda and unresponsive. Santa Clara County firefighters arrived shortly afterward and pronounced him dead at the scene, CHP officials said.

The man's name is not being released by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office until his family members are notified of the death. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to the CHP.
