Pet Parade Marches Into Burlingame This Weekend

Don't miss the dogs, cats, birds--even alpacas--heading into town Saturday.

Get out your snazziest collars, dust off your dog costumes and get your furry, feathered and cold-blooded friends ready for Burlingame’s Ninth Annual Pet Parade.

This Saturday, pets of all kinds and their people will take to the streets, showing off their best outfits and tricks.  Beginning at 10 a.m. on Broadway, people and their pets will strut alongside the Burlingame High School Marching Band and the Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band, led by the kids from Burlingame’s First Presbyterian Church Nursery School.

The event, expected to attract more than 1,500 people, features music by the San Mateo Elks Concert Band and sidewalk sales and promotions from Broadway businesses for participants and spectators, as well as two police dogs and two alpacas.

The Broadway Grill invites viewers to dine outdoors with their pets, and Preston’s Candy & Ice Cream will provide free chocolate tours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the day of the parade and the Friday before.

However, the parade is not just all fun and games. While all participants receive ribbons, special ribbons will be handed out to the winners of the Best Pet Trick, Most Unusual Pet, Best Dressed Pet and Most Original Float, Group or Wagon competitions.

Judging takes place directly after the parade, with a grand prize of a professional pet portrait from Pet Food Express, valued at $450.

All residents, regardless of pet ownership, are encouraged to attend. Members of the Mothers’ Club of Burlingame and Art Attack will supervise art projects for children, and local Boy Scouts will sell water bottles to raise money for their troop.

The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA will present a pet psychic and pet fortuneteller booth. PHS will also hold dog agility demonstrations from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion in Burlingame at 1450 Rollins Rd.

Pet owners wishing to march in the parade must report to the parking lot at Broadway and Chula Vista by 9:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, including a map of the parade route, visit www.burlingamepetparade.com.
