Will SB 1464 Prevent Bike Accidents?

A bill requiring drivers give bikers 3 feet of space hits home in Burlingame following a bike collision fatality.

On Monday, a after colliding with a tree-trimming truck in Burlingame.

The accident occurred on the 1100 block of Cortez Avenue, a street on which cars are often parked on both sides of the road, leaving a narrow lane for cars and bikers to navigate.

A proposed state law would make it a legal requirement for cars to give cyclists at least 3 feet when passing under Senate Bill 1464. The bill was a response to vehicle collisions with bicyclists throughout the state.

SB 1464 passed the State Senate and will go before the State Assembly Friday for a vote.

A commenter on Burlingame Patch questioned whether this law could have prevented the Burlingame accident and others like it.

Patch reader Olivia De Mars wrote a , noting that she often is forced to run in bike lines or on the street when sidewalks are not available. In these instances, she has found drivers fail to pay enough attention to those they share the road with.
