Whiz Kid: Gioia Barbera

This first grader knows how to play nice.

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.

Each week, Burlingame Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual  kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination in the comments or e-mail the information to miriam@patch.com.

Age:6

School: McKinley Elementary School

Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: She stopped another student from bullying another child.

Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Gioia approached a total stranger and confronted him because he was bullying a girl at recess.  She stood up for the girl being bullied even though the two do not know each other. This child took it upon herself to take a stand against bullying at her school.  The 6-year-old has very strong values and is not afraid to share them with others or stand up for what she believes in.  She leads by example and acts as a role model. She is an example of how people standing up against the negative effects of bullying can change the lives of others.
