Unusual Rain Today Will Probably Break Records

Slick streets and heavy puddling in spots, but great for the gardens.

Thankfully, today wasn't a Saturday or Sunday. No weddings, no chance of it raining on your parade.

But to have rain this late in the season, well, it just doesn't happen very often.

"It's actually quite unusual because in late June, we typically don't see any rainfall at all this time of year," said Rick Ganepa of the National Weather Service in Monterey.

The culprit is an upper level low-pressure system that moved in from the northwest, typically the type of system you'd see in the winter time.

Ganepa couldn't remember having significant rain to this degree this late in the season in recent memory. As of 3 p.m., San Francisco has received seven-tenths of an inch of rainfall.

"I'm not quite sure what the previous record is, but I'm betting that it's probably zero or probably a trace of rain at the most," said Ganepa.

Totals for the Peninsula will be reported in the next couple of hours. Everyone got rain; Ganepa says the system covers the entire Bay Area.

Most of the rain is expected to move through the area this afternoon. By tomorrow, the rainy conditions start to dry out.

Any more rain for the summer? Statistically, it's not likely, except if we have tropical moisture come up from the south, which could happen anytime from mid-July through August.

And the NWS's take on today's rain?

"We're actually happy about it," said Ganepa. "The forecast models were doing a pretty good job with it this time around. That doesn't always happen."
