Roosevelt Elementary Teacher Receives $50 in Patch’s Teacher Appreciation Contest

Parents gushed about first grade teacher Sean Kuiper as "a true gem."

At Roosevelt Elementary School's Science Olympiad Wednesday, Patch delivered a $50 Target gift card to Roosevelt teacher Sean Kuiper for winning Patch’s Teacher Appreciation Contest.

What does he plan to do with it? Save up for another iPad for the classroom.

His students love the math and video games like Mindcraft and Simple Physics they can play through the device, they said.

Krsten O., 6, responded, “iPad time!” when asked what she loves most about learning math in Mr. Kuiper’s class.

Another student, Fakhri S., 6, said his favorite part of the day is when Mr. K teaches them math games like pizza fractions.

Other students, like Daniela C., 7, said of Mr. K, “He teaches us and tests us, and when we don’t know, he teaches us again and helps us.”

For this year’s Open House, Kuiper, who has taught first grade for two years now, worked with the students to build a skiball machine that both the children and parents could play. He said it was important for parents to stay engaged in the Open House more than just walking around the room.

In our content, Cathleen Pearson wrote, “His dedication shines through every day in the classroom. He truly takes the time to get to know each child in a meaningful way and is committed to helping them succeed. A true gem.”

Eric Bohren wrote, “My son had Sean Kuiper last year and still talks about him even though he is attending North now. My sense is that he will be his favorite teacher for a very long time. I do not say this lightly as there are many fantastic teachers at Roosevelt and North.”
