New Mills-Peninsula Medical Center Opens
Patients were moved from the old to the new hospital as Mills-Peninsula Medical Center officially opened in Burlingame on Sunday.
Mills-Peninsula Medical Center officially opened its doors Sunday. Although the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility occurred April 30, Sunday marked the moving of all patients from the old hospital to the new.
Beginning at 7 a.m., patients were individually transferred to the new, adjacent building. Emergency room visitors and expectant mothers were directed to the new hospital as well.
Hospital employees prepared for the move by participating in a practice drill on May 5. Twenty volunteers acted as patients with different medical conditions and needs, so doctors and personnel were able to practice briefing patients on what to expect and keep them safe during the move.

“This ‘dry run’ gave staff a chance to practice emergency scenarios and test Command Center functionality,” said Mills-Peninsula Health Services Chief Operating Officer Dolores Gomez in a statement. “Everyone remained calm, professional, confident and friendly throughout the drill.”
The interior of the 241-bed facility was designed by Anderson Brulé Architects, which worked with doctors and hospital staff to create a calming and welcoming environment for patients and families.

“This hospital is transforming health care by incorporating designs for healing and sustainability, and making a significant contribution to the community,” said Mills-Peninsula Medical Center CEO Bob Merwin in a statement.
Natural materials, comfortable furniture and warm colors were all used to create an optimal healing environment, officials said. Day beds are present in most rooms to allow family members or friends to easily spend the night with a patient, further creating an inviting environment.
