Health Care District Seeks Community Input on Land Use

The Peninsula Health Care District is holding a community meeting Wednesday night concerning the future use of district-owned land west of the new Mills-Peninsula Medical Center.

District officials are seeking community input on the six-acre area.

“We’ve been doing some master planning for some time and looking at gaps, needed services, environmental issues community health needs,” said Peninsula Health Care District CEO Cheryl Fama. “[Now we’re asking] is there something that we haven’t thought about, is there something the community would really like to see there?”

She said the group has a good grasp on what could go in the space, having looked at zoning issues, height restrictions and other factors. While the district previously conducted three focus groups and now has a short list of ideas, it wants to make sure everyone in the community has a say.

The group is looking at issues like the future of skilled nursing facilities versus assisted living facilities, as well as the needs for acute rehabilitation and long-term care. Fama said they’ve also discussed a community center for multigenerational use, perhaps including gym and childcare facilities.

The meeting takes place in the Garden Room at 1600 Trousdale Drive in Burlingame at 7 p.m. Another meeting will be held in the same location on Saturday, July 14 at 10 a.m.

The Peninsula Health Care District was created in 1947 to address the health care needs of Millbrae, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, Foster City and San Bruno residents.

Although it initially built and ran the district hospital, it has since engaged Sutter Health to operate the facility and now focuses on improving health district-wide.
