Caltrain Fatality Scene Cleared: Trains Run Again

The Burlingame incident occurred just before 12:30pm this afternoon.

UPDATE 2:48 p.m. Caltrain service is slowly getting back to normal after the tracks were shut down earlier this afternoon when a person was struck and killed by a train in Burlingame.

Northbound train No. 143 hit the person at Peninsula Avenue at 12:23 p.m., Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said. The train left San Jose at 11:10 a.m. and was making all local stops. There were about 900 passengers on board, and they were transferred to another northbound train, Dunn said.

The tracks were initially shut down in both directions between the San Mateo and Millbrae stations, and SamTrans operated shuttle buses along that stretch.

The tracks have since reopened, and trains are traveling through the area at reduced speeds. The person who was killed has not yet been identified.

The death is the eighth fatality on Caltrain right-of-way this year, Dunn said. Last year, there were 11 deaths on the tracks.

UPDATE 12:52 p.m.: Caltrain is not operating on either the northbound or southbound tracks between San Mateo and Millbrae due to a fatality in Burlingame. SamTrans will set up a bus bridge between San Mateo and Millbrae.

Train No. 147, which is now in Millbrae, will turn back north to San Francisco.  

The train is currently stopped north of the Bayswater Avenue crossing in Burlingame, about two blocks from the Burlingame station.

UPDATE 12:42 p.m.: A person was struck and killed by a Caltrain on the tracks in Burlingame today, an agency spokeswoman said.

Northbound Caltrain No. 143 struck the person at about 12:23 p.m. on the right-of-way at Peninsula Avenue, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

About 900 were on board the train. The train left the Tamien station in San Jose at 11:10 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at the Burlingame station at 12:08 p.m. It was a local train, stopping at all stations.

Emergency personnel were en route to the scene as of 12:40 p.m. Efforts were also underway to transfer the passengers to another train.
