$2.15 Million Awarded to 19 Community Organizations

Did your favorite health care organization make the cut?

Nineteen health-focused organizations in San Mateo County will receive a boost to their funding Thursday night when the distributes $2.15 million in grants.

The District Board of Trustees look for organizations that are advancing the health and well being of San Mateo County residents, which falls in line with the District’s goals of improving health through education, prevention and health care access. Members analyze the health needs of the community and make their decisions based on what groups are providing these most needed services.

“The Peninsula Health Care District relies on these dedicated community partners to help us achieve our mission,” said District Board Chair Dan Ullyot, MD in a statement.  “We commend their efforts and commitment to providing residents with high-quality and effective health education, prevention and care. Because of their leadership, San Mateo County is at the forefront of delivering accessible, affordable health services to all those in need.”

This year’s grants benefit a wide range of community organizations, such as the American Red Cross San Bruno Resource & Recovery Center and the StarVista Insights Program and Crisis Center. Another recipient is the Children’s Health Initiative. Its grant will cover 100 percent of the cost of providing health insurance to eligible kids in the District.

Additionally, District board members are recognizing three community members for their work and commitment to public health. Those recognized this year include Dr. Stuart Viess, the Samaritan House medical director; Rosalyn Koo, a lifelong volunteer and community activist; and Alani Douglas, a high school senior at Crystal Springs Upland School.

The Peninsula Health Care District was originally formed as a hospital district after World War II as mandated by the state of California to meet the health needs of citizens not met by the private health sector. Although it initially built and ran the district hospital, it has since engaged Sutter Health to operate the district hospital and now focuses on improving health district-wide through venues such as providing care for those at lower socioeconomic levels and providing health education through public speaker series.

The awards will be given during the District Board of Trustees regular meeting Thursday at 5:45 p.m. in the Council Chambers at San Mateo City Hall, 330 West 20th Avenue, San Mateo.
