101 High Speed Pursuit

A high speed pursuit Saturday night took police northbound on the 101 and back down south on the 280.

Bay City News – A police chase that ensued after a man allegedly kidnapped his young daughter and her mother spanned at least two counties and left the suspect injured after he jumped off of an overpass, San Jose police said.

The ordeal began at 10:27 p.m. Saturday when police received a call that the suspect, a 26-year-old man, had come to the home of his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend on the 1600 block of Waverly Avenue and had forced the woman and their 11-month-old daughter into his pickup truck against their will, according to San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia.

Responding officers located the suspect and the two victims and tried to pull the car over, but the suspect refused to stop and tried to flee police, Garcia said. Garcia said the suspect's actions were "classified as kidnapping immediately."

The suspect traveled north on U.S. Highway 101 and led police as far north as Daly City, according to Garcia. The suspect then went back south down Interstate Highway 280, Garcia said.

In addition to several units and a helicopter from the San Jose Police Department, officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Daly City Police Department assisted in the chase, Garcia said.

When the suspect reached the overpass at the Woodside Road exit on I-280, he purposely crashed his car to bring the chase to an abrupt halt at 12:11 a.m. today, Garcia said.

The suspect then got out and pulled his ex-girlfriend from the car, Garcia said. After threatening her at knifepoint for less than a minute, the suspect leaped over the guardrail and fell about 30 feet onto Woodside Road beneath the overpass, Garcia said.

The baby girl and her mother were both unharmed in the incident, Garcia said. The suspect was taken to a Bay Area hospital for unknown injuries, he said.

"I know he's alive, I just don't know how seriously he's injured," Garcia said.
