Penny Ice Creamery will open a scoop shop in Capitola on January 19 if things go according to plan. “That’s what we’re shooting for,” said cofounder Zachary Davis. “That’s what is on the calendar.”
Penny Ice Creamery is the brainchild of chef Kendra Baker and Davis. They opened their first store in Santa Cruz in at 913 Cedar Street in August 2010. The Santa Cruz location is well supported by the community.
“We’ve done something that’s pretty cool, and pretty special and certainly the community has responded in a positive way so it feels good,” said Davis.
Davis believes the Capitola store will get the same level of community support as the Santa Cruz location because many customers are traveling from Capitola, Soquel, Aptos and other communities to get ice cream at Penny in Santa Cruz.
“It never gets boring because there’s always something new, but I think the flavor that has blown me away is Roasted Barley,” said Davis. “It’s so different yet so delicious.”
For those wishing to truly test the limits of ice cream flavors there is the pint-of-the-month club. “We told them (people who signed up for pint-of-the-month) up front this isn’t for the faint of heart,” said Davis. “It’s for people who really want to be adventurous.”
The new store will be located at 820 41st Avenue.
