Friday Fun

Burlingame seniors enjoy the friendly competition of Fridays.

A lot of people look forward to Fridays.  Members of the Burlingame Recreation Division give their senior citizens even more reason to say, "thank goodness it's Friday."

Drop-in for Active Adults has been an on-going Friday program for the last 15 to 20 years, said Tim Barry, recreation supervisor. Although there are other drop-in events for adults, including a weekly computer class, Friday is when seniors can come together for some fun and games.

"It's definitely a well attended program," Barry said. "They like being able to come together."

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each Friday, an average of 30 active adults congregate in the Burlingame Recreation Center Social Hall.  Once there, seniors partake in games of bridge, checkers and cards.

Some people come with a playing partner, while others come alone looking for a pick-up game with other solo seniors.  Although the faces in the group change from week to week, Barry said there is a group that attends each week.

"They sit in their same seats," Barry said. "There's definitely a following."

Recreation Center staff provides all necessary cards and board games for this free event, in addition to coffee and refreshments.

After the games are over, an afternoon movie is played. The movies range from documentaries to classics to new releases, depending on what the group wants to see.

Barry said it is important for Burlingame—and other towns, as well—to have these types of events.

"It's getting together with some of their friends," Barry said. "It's a chance for seniors to come together."
