Survey Asks Why Teens Are Putting Off Driving

The San Mateo County Mobility Survey is attempting taking a deep look at changes in teen driving behaviors and how that is affecting public transportation use.

A survey of teen drivers in San Mateo County is being conducted to better understand why fewer teenagers today are getting their driver’s license at the age of 16. The survey is part of a research project being conducted by the Mineta Transportation Institute, with support from the San Mateo County Transit District.

The survey (http://bit.ly/175Yor8) invites county residents 15 to 20 years of age to share their perspective on twenty-first century social issues concerning technology, obtaining a driver’s license, and public transit. This on-line survey is available until April 30.

Research indicates there has been a cultural shift as today’s teens are more apt to delay getting their driver’s license.

Twenty-first century challenges shape values and priorities in more dynamic ways than in past generations. These changes are attributed to increased costs and restrictions related to driving and owning an automobile, teenagers’ progressive environmental priorities, increased education requirements, employment responsibilities, household obligations, and advances in technology.

The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and asks questions about driver’s licenses, transportation, and technology. Responses to this survey will help public transportation providers, like SamTrans, better plan and market transit service for young county residents who do not have a driver’s license.
