Poll: Do You Vacation Here, or Elsewhere?

Millions of tourists come to the Bay Area for their vacations. But as a resident who already lives here, where do you go?

A few years ago, I was driving along the Pacific coastline, and noticed a bumper sticker on the car in front of me.

I Live Where You Vacation! shouted some script on a VW beetle bumper.

Sometimes, it occurs to me, we forget how lucky we are to live in an area with such gorgeous beauty. We have ebbs of the ocean just minutes to our west, snows on the Sierra not far to our east, magnificent and marvelous redwood trees in our surrounding forests.

Tourists come every day from thousands of miles away - and spend a lot of money doing so - to enjoy the things we have in our own backyard.

So we wondered; when you take a real vacation, do you take the trendy Staycation route, and hunt for hideaways right here in the Bay Area? Or do you hit the road, Jack, and seek sights seemingly superior in your mind?

Let us know in your comments. Then take our poll listed below.

Must leave the bay area in order to relax...I love Sunriver, Oregon.....Way better than Tahoe...No sales tax, friendly people, and the dollar goes a long way...Plus ample outdoor activities and great lodging options

We love it here and love to drive down the coast when we have a day off. But for a summer vacation- our favorite spot is warm, tropical, even hot, in Kiawah, South Carolina, a low country island near Charleston. Quiet, beautiful and like I said before, warm.

my friends fly off from across the globe just to see San Francisco downtown which is jjust a Bart ride away from. we usually get off at The Powell Station then take a cable car going to Lombard Street and finally to Pier 39. They usually tell me how mesmerizing SF is that they actually feel like they are in the song "I left my heart in SF." Personally, I go to Manhattan in NYC for a short vaca. Dave's article is very well stated and made me realized even more how privileged I am to live in the Bay Area! Thank you so much! :-)

Tahoe is pretty amazing in the summer and so much more dog friendly than down here, but with both sides of our family in Scandinavia we usually have to spend our vacation time over there, which is nice, expensive, but nice. We also love Hawaii, and honestly driving up to all the little historic gold mining towns in the mountains and camping here in CA is one of our favorite long weekend trips. Big Basin is another gem, along with Yosemite and the East side of the Sierras. We definitely pay to live in such a nice place though.
